Last night I had a dream …

I was at a TED Talk after party. I was mingling with a hot, witchy chick when we were seperated after both of us visiting the loo.

I soon found myself at a table with a number of well-knowns and some unknown folks where we were waiting for our main courses to arrive. Next to me was seated the guy from that YouTube show London Real. The conversation we were having was about hypnosis. Being a little tired of the hackneyed concepts and the trite use of the word I interjected we speak in terms of “trance” instead. He was all kinds of repulsed by the term for whatever reason. To reduce his misunderstanding I explained in as simple of terms as possible. I then used speech and gestures to show him trance is no more than reducing the infinite possibilities i.e. chaos of the mind by narrowing the attention and thought material to a specific channel.

He was immediately set at ease and listened intently as illustrated how trance, hypnosis, and all manner of directing the attention is as simple as making propositions that are accepted as true. If not absolutely true than at least relatively true. True enough to play with during the process of trance.

This is the act of induction.

To induce a thing is to simply “lead into”. To induce a certain line of behavior, responses, and actions is to merely introduce a conclusion. To infer the line of re-actions that one desires to have followed.

The etymology of conclude sounds like a nefarious act. It is to essentially “shut up and enclose” or to “shut together”. A conclusion settles inquiry. It sets the tone for what follows and induces what reactions follow.

When you successfully conclude that you are an authority on a subject, your audience will not deviate from this proposal until another signal arises that might challenge the proposition. When a satisfactory proposal is made, what follows is supposition. In other words what follows is what is “supposed” to happen.

Top-Down Bottom-Line

In bottom-line, simple terms it is creating a system of setting the rules and the components serving what has been put forth. This is so natural and ubiquitous that most people have no idea they are ever entrenched in the operation of trance. Authors use words to reduce the infinite possibilities of lines of thought by inducing their readers imaginations to follow the specific intentions of their suggestions. Both in fiction and non-fiction. Politicians use highly focused campaigns to shepherd, wrangle and lead the thoughts of their flock with propositions that resonate with their audience. The words and images they use propose qualities that will be quantified by their listeners. It is no different than religious leaders and even super-star celebrities.

Of course there are many complexities that arise in getting people to follow you unquestioningly and there are concerns whether it is detrimental or beneficial to have people follow another so unquestioningly. It certainly leaves a lot of room for exploitation and abuse.

Con-men, Cops, and Therapists

This kind of social trance is the same method that con-men find great success in gaining access and acquiring information from dupes who presumed everything was fine.

Despite there not being the classical quirks commonly associated wth hypnosis or trance work, like dangling watches, closed eyes, counting backwards, and deep, soothing voices speaking in even meter, all it takes is unchallenged suggestions. Suggestions that need not be spoken out loud or explicitly. Many suggestions are implicit. Meaning implied.

So, what is happening at the level of the mind in such instances?

Undoubtedly you’ve heard the terms conscious and subconscious (or unconscious) mind being used nearly anytime someone discusses hypnosis. The reason is this: at the back of every hypnotic interaction is the lead/ follow dichotomy.

The lead/ follow dichotomy

A source leads, induces, suggests and proposes relative truths which will be followed, conformed to and supposed to be evidently true.

Think, form and conform. Think, lead and follow. Consider, decide and obey.

In general, a servant is inefficient and even disruptive if they are busy thinking or trying to make decisions. Free thinking is treated as resistance by tyrannical, negative feedback looped authority. When a system has been put forth it is typically in the best interest of the leaders that it go as smoothly as possible.

Similarly, a hypnotherapist wants their client to not be resistant and simply go with the flow they determine will best serve their client. If the therapist is guiding a client to the root of their problem but their client is unfocused and obstinate and thinks about dinner, paying bills, and other unrelated subject matters, then the intended order of healing is complicated and disorganized. Instead of powerful transformation there is frustrated energy.

A skilled hypnotherapist utilizes any patient response skillfully to assist the client. Whereas a police officer wants a person they’ve stopped to be as compliant as possible and to not resist the order being imposed. Their job is to arrest free thought and action. It is why officers project as many symbols of authority as possible.

To reduce the challenge and diminish decision making of their suspect to only one possibility. There are elements of trance running in the background but orders differ from suggestions. Each requires that the subject trusts the objective force of the perceived and follow where they’re led. Take a moment to imagine how this is at play in most relationship dynamics around you.

All this is fine and simple but how do you utilize this all natural method of creating order in your life?

Well, there is self-hypnosis, entrancing others, and being perceived as an authority in a particular field of interest to name a few.

Let’s simplify

Look, it’s this simple.. propose xyz in such a way that it is accepted without question. Unless inducing question asking is a part of the system you’re setting forth, it will serve you to have people perceive what you suggest as obviously true. You determine the quality of their thoughts and behavior. Leaving them with the hypothesis they will naturally conform to proving as true.

I wonder if you might find value in learning pro-tips to be a more influential leader using trance consciously, since you already do it unconsciously.
